Requisitos

To attend this course you are required to:

  • age 18 and older
  • have a good English language proficiency
  • ability to swim and be comfortable at the sea is encouraged


To attend this course you are also required to:


  • fill the registration form at Santander Scholarship platform https://www.becas-santander.com/pt/program/ocean-alive-summer-course and provide all the necessary details for your participation - until May 20tth
  • to sign a statement on how the information given is true.
  • present a copy of your identification document (national ID card or passport)
  • send us an insurance proof (20 days before departure) for the time you will be attending this course , with the following coverage: travel health insurance, repatriation, third part liability. Email us at info@ocean-alive.org
  • depending on your country of origin, a visa for entering or staying in Portugal during the time of the course may be necessary; we will analyse the need for this document in the application analysis if necessary, it has to be sent to us 5 days before your departure to the program.

Ocean Alive Summer Course is a marine science and experiential learning program promoted by Ocean Alive NGO and Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal. It is specially aimed to those who dream of a future career with impact in solving conflicts regarding ocean sustainability.


The course will take place in Setúbal, Portugal, one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Setúbal city is located close to the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, classified as an important area for nature conservation, and Arrábida Natural Park, a hotspot of

marine biodiversity and the first marine protected area which was implemented in Portugal.


Ocean Alive is a portuguese NGO dedicated to transform behaviours for ocean protection through education and engaging local communities. It is known by its award-winning project "Seagrass Guardians". Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal aims to be reference in higher education.


The team leaders of the scientific program is composed of academic experts of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal in the fields of marine biotechnology and environmental monitoring and passionate marine biologists from Ocean Alive local NGO.


The scientific main topics of the course are:

  • water quality and human impacts
  • marine ecology: nursury habitats and key species
  • monitoring techniques and ocean health
  • climate change and blue carbon


Further information about the scientific contents and daily program is provided in the syllabus (see attached document).


The course enables participants to get 3 ECTS (credits) certificate.

The duration of the course is 10 days, a total 80 hours. Lectures, practical and laboratory work comprise 30h. Automous work comprise 50h aiming the completion of a final evaluation project. Students will experience a variety of environments such as field work, water sports, cultural and community activities.


Application deadline is May 20th.

The course will be held with a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 20 participants.

The course fee of the 10 days Ocean Alive marine science summer course is 1500 euros. It includes:

  • transfer from the airport (one bus ride on the 8th and on the 19 of July)
  • meals and accommodation
  • transportation
  • lectures, activities and program materials.

The fee does not cover insurance (please see more detail in "requirements").

 

A total of 12 grants will be awarded through Santander Scholarships program:

  • 3 grants partially funded covering 2/3 of the costs (1000 euros)
  • 9 grants fully funded covering the total course costs (1500 euros)

Grants do not cover the registration fee (150 euros). All student receiving a grant must pay the registration fee.

 

The 12 grants will be awarded to 6 portuguese and to 6 international aplicants. The evaluation criteria in the atribution of the grants will consider 1) gender equality and 2) the merit and the socio economic situation of the aplicants.

Aplicants will be informed of the decision by email until May 27th. If a grant is refused by the aplicant, it will be awarded to other studant, respecting the ranking order resulted from the evalution process.

3) pay the complementary course fee, until the 2nd of June, if applicable. In the case the applicant is awarded with a partly funded grant, the payment of the complementary fee of the course must be completed in this deadline.

4) pay the course fee, until the 2nd of June, if applicable. In the case the applicant is not awarded with a grant, the deadline for payment of the course fee is also the 2nd of June.




Cancellations:

The course fee is not refundable.

  • What are the unique features of this course?

    The unique features of this course are:

    • to improve students academic and soft skills in a network of marine scientific experts, a NGO and the local community.
    • to participate in a real project creating impact in people and the environment
    • to engage in field and water activities in natural parks and marine protected areas

  • What type of accommodation is provided?

    Students will stay at a local hostel in the centre of Setúbal city. The type of room provided is a shared room for 6 people of the same sex. The hostel has wifi and individual lokers.

  • I am vegetarian/ lactose intolerant, can the menu account for these food restrictions?

    Yes. Food restrictions can be accommodated. Please let us know about your case.

  • How can I apply?

    No. The aim of the course is to bring toguether a diverse group interested in Ocean sustainability issues.
